Earlier this week, Ogun State Governor. His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun came under heavy criticism especially on social media when the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education in the state jointly agreed to charge 25,000 naira for each students on the proposed reopening of schools in the state.
This decision by both Ministries was received with mixed feelings by the people of the State describing it as insensitive and harsh considering the hardship already inflicted on the people by the pandemic Covid-19 and the global lockdown which has affected the economic well-being hence, the disposable income quality of lives of the people.
The State Governor, on Monday evening, listened to the complaints of his subjects and decided to overturn the decision to charge 25,000 naira for Covid-19 and malaria tests for returning SS3 students in the state.
The Governor said, "after reviewing these developments, I have immediately directed that, the government laboratories carry out test for all returning SS3 boarding students at no cost. I have also directed that all those who paid for tests should be refunded."
In response to this development, the Olu Orile Kemta, HRM Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho has commended the Governor for listening to the people once again and standing by the people whom he has been elected to serve and protect.
In a statement signed and released through the Palace media and public affairs office, the Monarch commends the Governor for being responsive and responsible, describing him as one of the finesse and great leaders for his listening ability and doing the bidding of the people.
According to the Oba, he said, the decision for this reversal of payment for Covid-19 and malaria tests for returning SS3 boarding students is Indeed victory for the people as it clearly shows that their voices are held and respected by the government of the day in the state.
This is what is expected of a responsible, compassionate and people centred government.This shows that the Governor is an empathetic and listening leader who places premium on the teeming masses and the entire citizenry.
In kabiyesi words, " I personally commend the Executive Governor of our Gateway state for listening to the yearnings and aspirations of our people. It is clear like crystal that, ultimate power and true democracy rest on the shoulders of the people. He has shown that, true power is derived from the people and people alone."
